A CURTAIN curtain of fog has forced Sydney Harbour into lockdown and caused delays to domestic flights for the second time in as many days.
NSW Transport cancelled ferry services about 6am after a blanket of fog forced the harbour into lockdown for the second time in as many days.
As Sydneysiders again awoke to haunting scenes of street-level clouds and vanished buildings, Sydney Ferries deemed harbour crossings too dangerous and domestic flights have been delayed by up to four hours.
The fog did not clear until well after 8am yesterday and commuters can again expect lengthy delays according to NSW Transport.
“At this stage, there is no forecast as to when [ferry] services will resume.”
International flights have also been diverted to Melbourne and Brisbane.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said it was an unusual event to see Sydney blanketed in fog two days in a row.
“It’s odd that it’s happening a second day in a row as fog in the eastern suburbs is rare with just between two and five occasions a year and now we have two in a row which are widespread and thick,” he said.
“The presence of a high pressure system in the Tasman Sea and low wind speeds from the North West has brought about the fog.”
“Yesterday was colder with more moisture and drizzle but today we haven’t had much rain.”
“The fog will clear around 8.30 or 9 in the morning. The worst possible case is 9.30 to 10 in the morning,” he said.

Ferry passengers are advised to factor in additional travel time and can use their ferry tickets on Sydney buses.
And a Sydney Airport spokeswoman advised passengers to check their flights with their carrier as not all will be delayed.
“There are delays of up to four hours on domestic flights and some international flights have been diverted to Brisbane and Melbourne,” she said.
“Passengers are advised to check their latest scheduling updates with their airlines as not all flights will be affected.”
