Nicky Carle is determined to prove his worth at Sydney FC when he returns to the club next season after a year in the United Arab Emirates.
Sydney's former marquee player left on a season-long loan deal with Pro-League side Baniyas and returns to the sky blues after signing a contract extension that will keep him in the Harbour City until the end of the 2014/2015 campaign.
Carle believes his year abroad has made him a better player and taught him how to adapt, which will prove useful given a lot has changed since he left Sydney FC at the start of last season.
Frank Farina has taken over the coaching reins from Ian Crook and the club made their highest profile signing in Alessandro Del Piero.
Carle watched all of Sydney's games online and is determined to show Farina he deserves to be in the team.
"It's a new start in terms of a lot has changed since I left," Carle said from the UAE.
"Obviously it's very exciting and I'm definitely looking forward to a new challenge and coming back to Sydney.
"From my point of view it's about working hard to get back in the team. I'm going to be one of the senior players in the team and I have to show that I'm up to what he (Farina) needs of me. So I'll be working extremely hard to prove that I deserve to be in the team and obviously get myself into the starting XI."
Carle arrives home next week and will link up with Sydney for the pre-season.
"I had a chat with Frank a few months ago, before we started talking about me coming back and signing a new deal," Carle said. "I do have an idea of what he wants me to do and I'm there to do what the coach wants of me. So whatever role he decides to give me I'll give 100 per cent and make sure it works.
"I think we've got some really great players on paper, but it doesn't always translate on the field. If we can get all the players playing to their potential I think we've got a great chance."
The attacking midfielder is likely to play behind Del Piero, who he says created a spark in the A-League last season along with the revelation of the Wanderers.
"Del Piero coming and the Wanderers doing so well was a massive bonus for the A-League," Carle said.
"Every football player and every supporter will have a massive smile on their face seeing the way last season's A-League went. The way football has turned around in Australia, I don't think you could be happier. There's still a long way to go, but hopefully it continues on the up.
"Having the Wanderers is definitely good for the league and it's definitely good for Sydney. But being a western Sydney boy, I'm hoping Sydney FC finish on top because I'll take a lot of flak if we don't manage to get the right result against them."
