Rihanna, one of the world's biggest pop stars, is bringing her Diamonds world tour to Australia.

The Barbados-born and raised singer kicked off her world tour in Baltimore on Tuesday and will perform five times in Australia, starting in Perth on September 24, before playing in Adelaide, then Brisbane and Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena before finishing at Allphones Arena in Sydney on October 3.

The schedule appears to leave open the possibility for additional performances.

Rihanna (full name Robyn Rihanna Fenty), turned 25 last month and is at the peak of her powers, having just scored her 12th US No. 1 with Diamonds, the lead single from her new album, Unapologetic.

She was named the world's most-streamed female artist by Spotify this month and has sold an estimated 100 million albums in a career that is still only eight years old. That puts her ahead of fellow pop queens Beyonce, Pink and Lady Gaga.

Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci, who designed Rihanna's on-stage costumes for the world tour, including a gold-embroidered black cape, told Vogue this week the singer "represents what young and amazing means today. She is punk and talented."

But Rihanna's decision to renew her troubled relationship with controversial R&B singer Chris Brown has baffled the public and weakened her standing as a role model. Brown was convicted of assaulting her in 2009.

Rihanna and Brown split but recently reunited, and she told Elle UK this month that she wants a child with him.

The tour promoter is Live Nation and tickets go on sale next Tuesday, March 19. Prices are not yet available.

Rihanna's Diamonds World Tour: Tuesday, September 24, Perth Arena; September 26, Adelaide Entertainment Centre; September 28, Brisbane Entertainment Centre; September 30, Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne; October 3, Allphones Arena, Sydney.
