AAP Sydney has placed second on a list of the 50 "best cities" in the world above New York and Paris.Depending on what global survey you look at, Sydney's more popular and Melbourne's more liveable, but the harbour city's happiest.
The cities' rivalry is regularly put to the international test in an array of annual surveys and the results are always positive but never conclusive.
In the latest poll, Sydney is rated the world's second best city, months after Melbourne was ranked the most liveable place on the planet for the third successive year.
According to global research company Anholt-Gfk's list of best city "brands", Sydney ranked behind only London, but earned top spot in the categories for the warmest and friendliest locals and safety for visitors.
Sydney gained some ground in the battle for Australian bragging rights, with Melbourne back in 10th place.
But in August, the Economist Intelligence Unit again declared Melbourne the world's most liveable city and ranked Sydney seventh in a survey based on stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education and infrastructure.
Lifestyle magazine Monocle's annual list of liveable cities this year ranked Melbourne second behind Copenhagen, with Sydney ninth.
And last month, an Ipsos MORI global survey of 18,000 people in 24 countries rated Sydney the world's fifth favourite city and the second best in which to live. Melbourne did not rate in the top 10 in either category.
According to those 18,000 citizens, New York is the world's favourite city followed by London, while Zurich is the best place to live.
It all depends on the criteria obviously - the Mercer Quality of Living Survey last year put Sydney at 10th and Melbourne 17th in a list topped by Vienna, with Auckland at No.3.
The surveys can also be pretty specific. Earlier this year, Anholt rated Sydney as the world's second happiest city behind Rio with Melbourne at No.5.
The NSW government has pounced on the latest Anholt-Gfk results, saying they show Sydney is a "global city with an enormous reputation".
"Sydney is often recognised for its spectacular harbour, wonderful events and festivals and the other unique experiences for visitors," NSW Tourism Minister George Souris said in a statement.
"So it is particularly exciting to also be recognised for the people of Sydney and their positive effect on a visitors' experience."
The survey, based on interviews with 5144 adults across 11 countries, measures the "power and appeal of each city's brand image".
It looks at six "key dimensions" of presence, place, basic requirements, people, interesting things to do, and economic and educational opportunities.
