A man required 22 stitches to his head after he was viciously bashed with a stick and a supermarket trolley handle in a random attack outside a restaurant in Sydney's inner west.
The group of teenagers spat in the face of the 42-year-old before physically attacking him as he waited for his food order outside the restaurant in Strathfield on Tuesday night.
The victim told police he was standing on Everton Road about 6.30pm when he saw three males, believed to be aged in their late teens, including one with a mullet hairstyle, walk towards him from Strathfield Railway Station.
One of the teenagers began waving a stick in the air and spat in the man's face as they walked up to him.
The group surrounded the victim before one teenager struck him in the face with the stick, and another punched him in the head.
The third teenager then began attacking him with a handle taken from a shopping trolley. A NSW Police spokesman said handles were sometimes stolen from supermarket trolleys and used as weapons.
The victim fought back and managed to wrestle the trolley handle from his attacker, before the three teenagers ran off towards Wentworth Road.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene for head injuries, before taking him to Concord Hospital where he required 22 stitches to his head.
Police from the Burwood Local Area Command established a crime scene on Everton Road and seized several items for forensic testing.
The three offenders are described as being of Caucasian appearance, between 180 and 185 centimetres tall and in their late teens.
One male had a mullet haircut and was wearing a dark shirt, grey shorts and black and white shoes. The second male had short brown hair, and was wearing a grey shirt and black and white striped shorts.
The third male had a medium build, shaved hair and was wearing grey shorts and a grey and white striped shirt.
Anyone with information about the attack has been urged to contact Burwood Police or Crime Stoppers on 1 800 333 000.
