A TREE came down in Surry Hills in the city, a roof collapsed in Macarthur and lightning hit a car in Newcastle as more wild weather hit Sydney today.

Western Sydney was bracing for thunderstorms this evening and flashes of lightning and localised downpours drenched unprepared residents.

Wind gusts to almost 60km/h have already been recorded near the airport.

Strong winds uprooted a large tree on a busy inner Sydney street, bringing down powerlines and causing minor injuries to one person.

Fire & Rescue NSW said a tree planted in a footpath on Devonshire St near Elizabeth St in Surry Hills fell at about 1.30pm on Friday.

Some adjacent properties had their windows broken when the tree fell.

NSW Police are directing traffic away from the tree as the City of Sydney organises its removal.

Footage has also been posted on YouTube of an amazing lightning strike on a car.

"The thunderstorms could happen anywhere in the city during the day,'' the spokesman said.

Temperatures across the city should reach the low twenties today.

The bureau has also warned boaters that the winds are making both Harbour and open ocean waters dangerous despite a small swell.

Tomorrow also promises more thunderstorms, with the western suburbs again most vulnerable, as well as cloud and showers until the evening. A top temperature of 25C is forecast.

Sunday promises some sunshine and clouds but without any rain and a temperature of 26C.
