Sydney's next 'icon'? The three shortlisted designs for Packer's casino released - ABC Online

"These designs are truly inspiring; they literally take your breath away."

That's how James Packer describes the three shortlisted designs for his proposed casino at Barangaroo.

The designs (explained below) are now being reviewed by a judging panel consisting of representatives from Crown Resorts, Lend Lease, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill

"The building expression is based upon the elemental shapes found in the marine environment such as shells and molluscs."

Kohn Pedersen Fox

"The aim is to create an identity for Sydney's third icon alongside the Harbour Bridge and Opera House... influenced by yacht sails, the bridge itself and the Opera House. The lean of the building evokes nautical themes such as a ship's prow or a heeling yacht.

Wilkinson Eyre Architects

"Reminiscent of three twisting petals. The sculptural form of the building takes its inspiration from nature, being composed of organic forms without literal or direct reference."

Former NSW government architect Chris Johnson is impressed with the designs, particularly the 'dynamic shapes'.

"I think there's a movement in architecture to make buildings feel like they're fluid, they're moving, they're not just static objects sitting there."

But he does have a preference.

"To me, the Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill building is the one that picks up the character of what was going to be the harbour out in the water, and brings it on to the land."

"It is going be a very iconic building that will be seen by many people and will become a picture postcard for the city, I think," Chris Johnson says.

The judging panel will consider the full submissions before announcing a design winner later in the month. You can see further information about the three designs here.
