Three people have been wounded in a shooting in western Sydney.


Ambulances were called to a residential address in Smithfield shortly after 8 pm tonight.


Police confirmed that three people have been taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.


"I heard someone yelling, then it went: bang, bang, bang and it didn't sound like firecrackers," one neighbour told smh.com.au.


Residents say part of The Horsley Drive has been closed off and a large police presence is in the street with at least one helicopter circling overhead.
