MORE CCTV cameras could be watching people in Sydney's city centre from next year under plans to make the streets safer after dark.
City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore says councillors will be asked on Monday night to endorse the installation of 10 new CCTV cameras in Kings Cross, Surry Hills and the CBD.
If they agree, it will bring the total number of cameras in the city to 97.
The expanded surveillance is part of a push to boost safety and tackle alcohol-related violence, Ms Moore said.
"The state government is responsible for law and order ... including CCTV, but over the last 10 years the City has stepped in because no one else was funding them," she said in a statement on Sunday.
"This expansion of our CCTV network will assist NSW Police in preventing, detecting and investigating crimes in some of our busiest late-night precincts."
The locations for the CCTV include the intersections at William Street and Crown Street and Oxford Street and Darlinghurst Road.
