Sydney still needs 2nd airport: Albanese - The Australian

THE need for a second Sydney airport won't be overshadowed by any proposals to build an east coast high speed rail network, the federal government says.

Infrastructure minister Anthony Albanese says there's no doubt Sydney needs a second airport, even though Labor is considering a report recommending a high speed rail line between Brisbane and Melbourne.

"This project will not obviate the need for a second airport," he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

"We need a second airport."

Mr Albanese also said there was "no way" NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell would see high speed rail as an alternative to an another airport other than Mascot.

Wilton, an area in southwest Sydney, has been identified as a preferred location for the new international aviation hub.

Mr O'Farrell has previously suggested Canberra as a second airport.

"It's not a serious proposition," Mr Albanese said.
