More than 5,000 of Sydney’s adrenalin junkies pushed themselves to their physical limits today when they tried their hand at the world’s hardest obstacle race series, Spartan Race.
Competitors were at the mercy of the course at Razorback Ridge in Picton today, facing obstacles including rope climbs, fire jumps, spear throws and barbed wire crawls, before facing off against Spartan Gladiators in the battle arena. As the ultimate test of strength, balance and endurance, the course was specially created to avoid bottle necks and competitors were penalised for any obstacles they didn’t conquer on their first try.
“I had my first taste of the Australian Spartan Race two weeks ago when I tackled the Melbourne event, but Picton’s hills, thrills and spills made this the most gruelling obstacle race I’ve ever completed,” said Australia’s leading female obstacle racer, Deanna Blegg. “I can’t wait for the ‘Super’ 14 kilometre race in Brisbane on June 22nd so I can complete the trifecta!”
While many of the 5,000 competitors were testing their own strength by completing the course, teams were showing signs of camaraderie helping each other through the mud ditches, families were encouraging their kids through a muddy mini version and spectators were enjoying the festival atmosphere of the event.
Competitors were timed, ranked and judged as they battled their way through the 7 kilometre brutal course earning their right to cross the finish line. Setting the benchmark for elite obstacle courses globally, today’s Spartan race pushed competitors to their physical and mental limits.
“I brought Spartan Race to Australia so we could try our hand at the world’s hardest obstacle race series,” said Spartan Race Australia director, Max DeLacy. “Sydney did an amazing job tackling Picton’s harsh landscape and I hope to see a lot of them take on the bigger races we have coming up later this year.”
A portion of the money raised from today’s race will be donated to Soldier On; Australia’s only foundation that directly supports the nation’s defence members who have been wounded whilst on active duty.
