Workers assess the damage in the M5 tunnel. (Nine News)
One of Sydney's busiest roads has been thrown into chaos after an over-height truck crashed into the roof of the M5 tunnel.
The east-bound section of the tunnel has been shut with reports of debris strewn across a 150m section of the road due to the incident which happened just before 9am.
Lines of traffic are queued back nearly 12km from where the incident happened between King Georges Road and Marsh Street at Beverly Hills, south-west of the city.
Emergency services are assessing the situation and it is not known when the tunnel will reopen.
