Sydney's weather has broken another record.

The chilly temperature on Sunday was recorded as the coldest day in November in seven years, reaching a top of only 17.6 degrees.

The last time Sydneysiders felt such brisk weather in November was when the temperature dropped to 16.6 degrees in 2006.

This latest record comes as Sydney has already reported its warmest winter ever and 2013 is likely to be its hottest year.

But as the cooler weather and steady rain swept across the city, a weather warning was issued on Sunday afternoon for strong winds and the chance of flash flooding on Sydney's coastal areas and the Hunter region.

This evening, Sydney will experience fairly significant southerly winds, the bureau's duty forecaster Jake Phillips said.

The average wind speed is expected to reach 60km/hour with occasional peak gusts of up to 90km/hour over the next 24 hours, he said.

Weatherzone meteorologist, Kim Westcott, said a low pressure system was driving the rain and wind on to the coast.

"Heavy rain is expected along on the coast tonight and tomorrow. It's expected to clear tomorrow afternoon or early Tuesday."

The Sydney metropolitan area may see 50mm to 100 mm of rain over the next 48 hours, she said.

From 9am Saturday to 9am Sunday, the city received 41 mm of rain.

It's been a weekend of wild weather. On Saturday a group of school campers and two teachers were rescued after rising river levels forced them to higher ground.
