Sydney storm thwarts capital commuters - The Dominion Post

Wild weather in Sydney overnight was the reason why some Wellington commuters did not have the most up-to-date bus schedule information at their fingertips this morning.

Metlink’s real time information service, which uses GPS data to display accurate arrival times at bus and train stops across the region, was not working for all Go Wellington and Valley Flyer services during the morning peak.

The system stopped working about 8am and was out for about two hours.

A spokeswoman for Greater Wellington Regional Council, which runs Metlink, said the problem stemmed from a storm in New South Wales.

The Sydney-based company that created the real time information software had planned to remotely upgrade it overnight. But the storm caused a minor power cut, which delayed the process.

The upgrade was finished before bus services began in Wellington this morning but it did not take effect until during the morning peak, the spokeswoman said.

‘‘Updates are normally completed without impacting the system but this one included more in-depth changes.’’

Real time information for Mana and Newlands buses, as well as all train, were not affected.
