A 44-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly attacking another man with an axe in Sydney's south-west.
The victim was walking along a road in the suburb of Lurnea when a motorist stopped near him and got out of his vehicle armed with an axe.
The motorist allegedly hit the victim a number of a times before returning to his car and driving away.
The injured man, who is aged in his mid-20s, suffered wounds to his leg and head.
He remains in a serious condition at Liverpool hospital.
The alleged attacker was arrested at his home in the suburb of Cabramatta and is currently being interviewed by police.
Crime scenes have been set up at the place where the victim was bludgeoned and at the alleged attacker's home.
