Two people missing in Sydney fire - The West Australian

Emergency crews are looking for two people believed missing following an explosion and fire inside a building in Sydney's west.

The fire inside the commercial and residential block at Wentworthville broke out about 4.15am (AEDT) on Tuesday.

The building on Station Street has completely collapsed as a result of the blaze and firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze.

"It's not going anywhere. It's not spreading any further than it is," a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman at the scene told AAP.

He said two people had been reported missing inside the building.

Two other people injured in the blaze managed to escape and were taken to hospital.

Seven police officers were also taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, he added.

Police have declared the area a crime scene and are treating the blaze as suspicious.

It's understood the two-storey building comprised residential units on top of a commercial premises, possibly a supermarket.

The Fire and Rescue spokesman said emergency workers were using thermal imaging cameras to "try to get in there and work out how many people might be in there".

It's not yet known what sparked the fire.

Police said it was also not known if an explosion at the building caused or was a consequence of the fire.

They said the two men injured in the fire were in a stable condition at Westmead Hospital, and were being treated for burns.

Detectives are waiting to speak with the injured men.
