Greater Western Sydney launches bold bid to secure Collingwood defender ... - Herald Sun

With the Blues close securing the services of Dale Thomas, Carlton have set their sights on Heath Shaw and Geelong veteran Paul Chapman. While the Tigers have picked up ruckman Shaun Hampson.

GREATER Western Sydney has launched a bold $4 million play for disgruntled Collingwood defender Heath Shaw.

After being jilted by Buddy Franklin, the Giants have zoned in on Shaw with a deal believed to be around $800,000 a season for five years.

And they have also spoken to the Pies premiership star about a development role at the club for at least two years at the end of his playing days.

Department of Trades

Shaw, who still has two years to run on a contract with the Magpies, is weighing up the once-in-a-lifetime offer compared with his desire to be a part of a successful team.

Geelong is leading the race there and has also put an attractive four-year deal to the 27-year-old.

Heath Shaw

Collingwood defender Heath Shaw could be headed north of the border.

Franklin’s defection to cross-town rival Sydney last week stunned the Giants but it meant they became a big player in the trade period which officially started yesterday.

The move on Shaw comes after GWS moved quickly to sign Swans ruckman Shane Mumford following the Franklin snub.

Shaw, who didn’t attend Collingwood’s best and fairest function on Friday night, is overseas and weighing up offers from five clubs.

A trade between the GWS and Collingwood is the most likely scenario should Shaw give it the green light as GWS hard nut Taylor Adams wants to return to Victoria.

Signed, sealed and delivered

Adams, 20, nominated the Pies and Geelong as his preferred destination but would end up at the Westpac Centre as some part of the Shaw deal.

There was only one trade officially completed on day one with Carlton ruckman Shaun Hampson moving to Richmond in exchange for Pick No.28.

The Blues are now expected to on-trade that pick to Hawthorn for speedster Shane Savage.

In other developments:

ESSENDON is playing hard ball with the Western Bulldogs over forward Stewart Crameri. The Dogs have offered its second-round selection, No.22, but the Dons are wanting a pick in the first-round.

MELBOURNE and St Kilda have expressed interest in Essendon midfielder David Myers but the Bombers have said he is contracted and not going anywhere.

YOUNG Brisbane ruckman Billy Longer has nominated reigning premier Hawthorn as his preferred destination.

RICHMOND and North Melbourne have ruled out signing veteran Cat Paul Chapman although Carlton have said they will look at the three-time premiership star.

NORTH Melbourne is pushing to get Nick Dal Santo through free agency rather than a trade, much to the angst of St Kilda.

MELBOURNE shopped around its No.2 pick with some extraordinary demands which were laughed at by some of its rivals. One offer which may hold some weight was to West Coast in exchange for midfielder Luke Shuey.
