A man has been killed by a truck as he walked on the M4 motorway in Sydney's west.

Police say the man was hit near the James Ruse Drive on-ramp at Granville about 5:30am (AEDT).

Emergency service workers tried without success to revive the man.

The truck driver stopped at the scene and has been questioned by police.

Police say he will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

The incident has caused major delays for morning commuters.

Two of the three city-bound lanes of the M4 remained closed until mid morning after the accident, with the queue of traffic stretching for up to 12km.
