PILES of hoarded "junk" fuelled a house fire in inner western Sydney, which has left an elderly couple in hospital.

Flames were spotted at the house on Edinburgh Road, Marrickville, about 9.20pm (AEST) on Sunday.

A dozen firefighters remained at the scene on Monday morning because large piles of possessions, stacked up to two metres high in some rooms, were hampering efforts to extinguish the fire. "The joint's full of junk," a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman told AAP.

"We're still trying to get inside ... To them, it's probably their possessions.

"It's been built up over a number of years."

He said fire crews were likely to remain on scene until 9am or later.

Much of the property has been destroyed and neighbouring residents were temporarily evacuated on Sunday night.

A 68-year-old resident was taken to hospital with burns to her chest and legs, but is expected to be released on Monday.

Her 71-year-old husband is being treated for smoke inhalation in hospital.

At the height of the fire there were seven pumpers at the property.

Police have cordoned off the area and set up a crime scene as investigations continue into the cause of the fire.
