Police have questioned two girls accused of trying to light a fire in a Sydney reserve.AAP Police have questioned two girls accused of trying to light a fire in a Sydney reserve.

Two girls aged 12 and 13 are accused of trying to light a fire in a reserve in Sydney's west on the same day that firefighters battled destructive blazes across the state.

Police say members of the public reported the girls after seeing them trying to start a fire in a Bonnyrigg reserve just after midday on Friday.

Firefighters later put out a blaze in the area that burned up to 30 square metres of native grass as police chased the girls, who ran away.

The girls were arrested at a nearby business and taken to Fairfield police station where they were questioned and released.

Investigations are continuing.
