Dear Expats: Sydney - Red Bull (International)

A big city with waves? And it ain't cold? And there's jobs? And the minimum wage is 20 an hour? Hoo!

Think about this. In what city can you bounce off an international flight and be holding the reins at an eight-foot ledge 30 minutes after you've scooped up your bags? Where else will you be earning 150 large and surfing before and after work, pin trunks, in the sun-washed summer months? What other city has hundreds, I ain't kiddin' ya, hundreds of weekend options, north and south?

Sydney is a geographical phenomenon. Split in two by the world's most spectacular harbour and part of a coastline rimmed by what seems like an endless stretch of sandy beaches and boastful headlands, if you want to surf, be a generate in the offline hours, Sydney is your town.

Why you'll wanna go there: The Thing about Sydney is its two primary beaches, Bondi and Manly, a couple of nautical miles apart, face in opposite directions. Therefore, y'gots Bondi's mouth swallowing ay kinda south swell (and offshore in summer's predominant nor-easter) and Manly (protected from winter's southerlies) taking in the north with plenty of beaches in between taking a piece here and there.

Waves y'gotta ride: North Narrabeen – a sandbottom left. Ours – a deadly righthand ledge right there on the southern headland at Botany Bay. Voodoo – lefthand tube at the very southernmost point of Cronulla. And The Wedge at Whale Beach – a lefthand bowl that bounces off the beach's northern headland. For a lil beach break fun head down to Maroubra, a doz clicks south-east of the city centre.

Wetsuits: Inflate a 3/2 in winter and most of spring, trunks and vest for the rest of the year, unless them bones of yours are particularly weak.
