LABOR faces being wiped out in enough seats in western Sydney to hand the Coalition government on gains in NSW alone on September 7.

Under Kevin Rudd's leadership, Labor is facing a similar level of "catastrophe" forecast under Julia Gillard before she was removed as prime minister eight weeks ago in a bid to avoid the loss of up to 10 seats in Sydney's west.

There are now at least eight Labor-held seats in real danger, including those of Chris Bowen and Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury, with another two at risk.

The swing against Labor in the western Sydney marginal seats is three times worse than the swing against the ALP in national polling and the Prime Minister, who leads Tony Abbott as preferred prime minister nationally by 44 to 40 per cent, is trailing the Opposition Leader in western Sydney by 40 to 46 per cent.

According to a Newspoll survey conducted in five western Sydney marginal Labor electorates exclusively for The Australian from last Friday to Wednesday, Labor's primary vote in its heartland has fallen 9 percentage points to 34 per cent since the 2010 election while the Coalition's has risen 9 points to 52 per cent over the same time.

On a two-party-preferred basis, using preference flows at the 2010 election, there has been a nine-percentage-point swing away from Labor to 43 per cent across the electorates of Greenway, Lindsay, Banks, Reid and Parramatta, all of which are held on margins of less than 5 per cent.
