Sydney train assault over school tie - Sydney Morning Herald

A couple have been charged over a train assault in North Ryde.

A woman demanded a 15-year-old boy hand over his school tie, then the man threw a beer bottle at him, only to strike another passenger.

A 30-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman have been charged for the assault and glassing with police calling for witnesses to come forward.

About 4:15pm on Wednesday, a man and woman were onboard a train travelling between Chatswood and North Ryde when they allegedly assaulted two passengers.

It is alleged the woman approached the 15-year-old boy and demanded he hand over his tie. When he refused the woman allegedly attempted to remove the tie from around his neck before hitting him a number of times.

During the incident a man allegedly picked up a beer bottle and threw it towards the boy, but the bottle struck a woman's face and shattered causing a cut above her eye.

The pair then fled the train at North Ryde station where they were followed by a member of the public who called police.

Officers attended Edmondson Road, North Ryde and arrested the pair following a scuffle where the woman allegedly resisted police and kicked an officer in the face.

The pair were taken to Ryde Police Station where the man was charged with affray, reckless wounding, offensive conduct and escaping lawful custody.

The woman was charged with affray, common assault, assault police, resist police and offensive conduct. Both were refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Thursday.

A 53-year-old woman who was struck in the face by the bottle, was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where she underwent surgery. The boy was not injured during the assault.
