A man savagely mauled by a pack of pitbulls that apparently escaped from a Sydney backyard is expected to remain in hospital for some time.
The three dogs attacked the 49-year-old who was jogging in the southwest Sydney suburb of Ashcroft about 2pm on Sunday.
Police Superintendent James Johnson said the dogs, which he understood were all American pitbulls, were being held by the local council.
Officers are talking to the council and will apply to the courts to have the animals destroyed.
Johnson said the man was still recovering in hospital.
"The injuries are so serious I would expect him to be hospital for some time," he told Fairfax Radio.
He described the dogs as "not an animal I would have in my backyard" and believed they had escaped without the knowledge of their owner.
The owner could face penalties ranging from a fine to two years in jail.
A witness described running from his backyard when he "heard a bloke screaming out for mercy".
"I just seen these three pitbulls who had this bloke, virtually chewing him to pieces," the witness said.
"... I just grabbed a pot plant and cracked it over the dog's head."
