NSW gun report: week ending March 3 - Sydney Morning Herald

NSW gun report

A teenage boy accidentally shot his father in the leg while hunting in the state's Riverina region last week.

The 64-year-old man was driving his utility on a property in Bowna, 35km from Albury, with his son aged 16 in the rear tray late on Friday evening. "It's believed the utility hit uneven terrain as the boy fired a shot, causing the bullet to enter the cabin and hit his father in the leg," police said in a statement. He was treated at Albury Base Hospital and released. Charges are not expected to be laid.

Also in the Riverina, a man has been charged for pointing a rifle at a woman who approached him outside a block of units in Leeton. The 44-year-old man was allegedly seen loitering in a utility on Sycamore Street at about 5pm on Friday March 1. When a female resident approached him, he allegedly pointed a rifle at her, causing her to run away. He drove off but police arrested a local man, and seized four registered firearms. Detectives believe the incident is linked to an assault in the local area on February.

Three illegal firearms were seized in Sydney's south-west late last week, as Operation Apollo officers raided separate properties and stopped a vehicle from which a weapon appears to have been discarded. One of the weapons, a .22 calibre self-loading pistol, was seized along with ammunition, drugs and $14,500 cash during a search warrant at Greenacre on Thursday. A 39-year-old man was charged with firearm, drug and proceeds of crime offences, while a second man, aged 29, was charged with drug supply. In a separate search nearby, police located a shortened firearm and ammunition, while a .44 calibre revolver was located on a street at Yagoona shortly after a car stop on Thursday night. Inquiries into these incidents are continuing.

Police revealed last Monday they had arrested a man over a shooting that took place in Panania just before Christmas last year. They allege the 23-year-old attended a property on Lawler Street, Panania, armed with a shotgun and became involved in a physical altercation with another male. He discharged one bullet that narrowly missed the male, but passed through several internal walls of the house, before firing three more shots before he fled. No one was injured, and he is facing a string of charges before Campbelltown Local Court.

Police issued a safety warning this week after the accidental discharge of a key-ring gun at a service station in Sydney's west on Saturday. It's understood the small key-ring gun, loaded with two .25 calibre rounds, was found by a customer in the cark park of the Warwick Farm, with an employee unwittingly firing it because he did not know what it was. He was not injured, but there was minor damage to property within the shop. The item is classified as an illegal weapon and an investigation is underway to establish where it came from.

"If you suspect an item might be dangerous or might cause damage you should not attempt to handle it but to instead call police immediately," police said.

A man and his girlfriend have been charged following a police pursuit at Canley Vale on Tuesday morning, following which police seized a loaded firearm inside the bedroom of the couple's home.

The pursuit began at 11.15am, when officers tried unsuccessfully to stop a white Hyundai Accent on Sussex Street at Cabramatta. The 23-year-old male stopped in the driveway of a home on Chancery Street, Canley Vale, running into the house where his girlfriend allegedly attempted to close the door behind him, hitting an officer on the head. The male was arrested after a brief struggle and the woman, 18, was charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, not keeping it safely, possessing ammunition without a licence and assault police. Both are facing charges before Bankstown court.

In Gosford, a man held police at bay for over an hour having allegedly threatened to shoot someone on Tuesday. After his arrest, police allegedly located a shotgun, loaded with one round of ammunition, in a nearby vehicle, and additional ammunition stored in a bag. The 25-year-old faces a string of charges and faced Gosford Local Court. Still on the NSW Central Coast, a man was arrested and a replica handgun seized after a 25-year-old man allegedly threatened security staff at a licensed club in Natuna Avenue, Halekulani, on Saturday. It's understood he had been thrown out of the venue and made the threats, before going home. He was arrested, charged with possess unauthorised pistol and will face Wyong Local Court later this month.

Police are investigating whether two robberies in neighbouring south-west Sydney suburbs within three hours on Thursday morning are connected. About 12.40am, a man drove a silver Mitsubishi station wagon through the drive-through the McDonalds on Atkinson Road, Liverpool. As he reached the drive-through window, the man produced a firearm and threatened the female staff member, demanding cash. Described as aged in his 20s or 30s, with olive skin, and wearing dark sunglasses and a fluoro yellow long sleeve top, he was given a sum and drove from the scene south on the Hume Highway. At about 3am, a man in an older model, light blue Mitsubishi Lancer sedan pulled into the McDonald's drive through on Smithfield Road, Smithfield, and threatened the attendant with a firearm. Wearing a black hooded jumper, black sunglasses and a white bandanna covering his face, he left with a sum of cash and was last seen travelling west on Victoria Street. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Finally, police are investigating how a man who walked into Bankstown Police Station with a bullet wound to his left leg came to be injured. The 38-year-old was taken to hospital in a stable condition and inquiries are continuing and police are pressing the victim for more information.
