JULIA Gillard has switched from "days of governing" to an election campaign blitz to defend Labor heartland seats, amid growing fears in government ranks that Labor is headed for a worse defeat than the rout Paul Keating suffered in 1996.
As it emerged that the Prime Minister, her cabinet and MPs would turn its focus to western Sydney this weekend, gloomy Labor MPs said they feared double-digit swings against the government in its key Sydney heartland and they could not see offsetting gains in electorates in the rest of the country.
