A boy who skipped school with his friend and took the train into the city has failed to return home overnight, sparking a widespread search across Sydney.

Police hold serious concerns for the welfare of Jaydan Patterson, 13, who was last seen in the Airds area after leaving his school at Warwick Farm with his friend, 11-year-old Tyler Rolani, on Monday morning.

Police say both boys have intellectual disabilities and become easily disoriented.

Late on Monday night, Tyler returned home to his family in Macquarie Fields and was said to be safe and well.

However Jaydan, who has dark hair and freckles, remained missing on Tuesday morning.

Police said the boys left their school about 10.35am on Monday and went to Warwick Farm Railway Station, where they were captured on CCTV camera boarding a train at 11am.

Further CCTV showed the boys at Town Hall Railway Station just before midday. Police said the boys split up during the day.

About 6pm on Monday, Tyler was seen catching a train from Campbelltown Railway Station heading towards Flemington. He returned to his home in Macquarie Fields after 11pm on Monday.

Jaydan was last seen in the Airds area.

He has dark hair and freckles and is believed to be wearing shorts, a dark collared shirt and black runners. He is believed to be carrying a backpack.

Anyone with information about Jaydan's whereabouts has been urged to call triple-0 immediately.
