Laneway wins battle againstSydney “fun police” - FasterLouder

The St Jerome’s Laneway Festival has emerged victorious in its battle with Sydney’s “fun police”.

Laneway had applied to Leichhardt City Council to increase the footprint of its Callan Park site and its capacity by 4000, but faced opposition from a small activist group called the Friends of Callan Park. The group – led by NSW Greens Party Convenor Hall Greenland and including four councillors from Leichhardt City Council – had reportedly letterboxed the community and lobbied councillors in opposition to Laneway’s development application which had support from the NSW Police and the adjoining Sydney College of the Arts.

But that application was approved at a Leichhardt City Council meeting last night attended by promoter Michael Chugg and Laneway’s Danny Rogers, as well as members of Sydney’s music community. The deciding vote was cast by Leichhardt City Council Mayor Darcy Byrne. “For Laneway to have been curtailed, against all independent planning advice would have been another body blow for Sydney’s live music scene,” Byrne said in a statement. “Dozens of music lovers waited for hours to speak in support of the festival, proving once again that Sydney-siders will fight for their right to party.”

It now means that next year’s Laneway will run at a capacity of 12,500, instead of last year’s 8000, over an increased area of Callan Park. Laneway described the victory as “exciting news” on Facebook last night. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of many live music lovers, a huge thank you to everyone who contributed including many passionate local residents and the fabulous St Jerome’s Laneway Festival team.”

Sydney’s Laneway festival will take place at the Sydney College Of The Arts in Callan Park, Rozelle, on February 2. More dates below.
