One person is dead after a crash between a truck and several cars on the Hume Highway near Campbelltown in Sydney's south west.

The crash happened just after 2:00pm (AEDT) this afternoon near the Narellan Road Interchange.

Police say one person in the truck has died but have not confirmed if it was the driver.

The accident has forced the closure of the highway in both directions.

Leighton Archer from the Transport Management Centre says it is unclear how the long the road will be closed.

"Traffic is obviously very heavy both directions. Southbound motorists are being diverted off the motorway at Campbelltown Road and can rejoin at Narellan Road," he said.

"Northbound motorists are being diverted off the motorway at Narellan Road to then rejoin the motorway at Campbelltown Road."
