NSW Police and the Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) are trying to track down a driver who dumped a large trailer load of asbestos next to Sydney's M4 motorway this morning.

The Fire Brigade says 200kg of bathroom remnants - including asbestos, tiles and fixtures - was discovered near the Roper Road exit at Colyton, near Mount Druitt, around 10:30am.

Hazmat crews were called in but say the public was not at risk of contamination from the material.

Police and the RMS are investigating.
