A SECOND Sydney shooting in as many days since police raided nearly 270 premises across the city in a weekend blitz on gun crime has left a man in hospital and detectives with a baffling case on their hands.
A man aged in his 40s staggered into Fairfield Hospital around 11.30pm last night, presenting with a gunshot wound to his leg.
Medical staff at the hospital immediately alerted police, before the man was rushed to Liverpool hospital for surgery.
A large crime scene was soon established on Ligar Street, Fairfield where police worked tirelessly throughout the night and early morning in an attempt to piece together a timeline of yet the latest shooting to rock the Sydney streets.
As late as 3am today, police were still unsure if they had pinpointed the scene of the crime.
"There's a few bizarre circumstances about this one that we can't unravel at the moment," Fairfield inspector John Corn told The Daily Telegraph.
"It's different to the other shootings over the recent days where we could definitely say they were targeted - this one is a little out of the ordinary.
"We're not even sure if this is where it happened. It makes it difficult that none of the locals reported any gunshots.
"It's hard to work this one out, there's something not quite right."
Forensic services were on scene overnight and seemed to be focusing their investigations on a number of houses along Ligar Street.
The police dog squad was also called in to help locate ballistic evidence.
Another Fairfield police officer on the scene told The Daily Telegraph: "There's something unusual about this, it's a little bit out of the blue."
While details remain murky about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, tensions remain high that the next bout of bikie-related gun violence could be just around the corner.
A 32-year-old man with links to the Comanchero bikies was shot in the torso in St Marys on Sunday night, with witnesses describing him as a hardworking father.
His shooting came in the days after Tyrone Slemnik and Ali Jammas - both members of the Hells Angels club - were slain in shootings in Eastlakes and Abbotsbury respectively.
A horrifying drive by shooting in Bexley last week nearly claimed the life of 19-year-old Bassil Hijazi, a man believed to have links to the Comancheros.
Targeted gun crime has reached crisis point in Sydney over the past month, prompting NSW police to launch a huge operation at the weekend as part of Operation Apollo 7.
More than 80 weapons and a large amount of drugs were seized in the raids, which focused on 267 premises around metropolitan Sydney.
"Every time we remove guns, other weapons and drugs from the street, the wider community benefits," detective superintendent Scott Cook said.
"We are out there every night targeting those people who are using guns to settle differences or further their criminal activities."
Detectives continue to investigate last night's shooting in Fairfield and the victim remains in a stable condition in Liverpool hospital.
He is assisting police with their inquiries.
