WET weather is being blamed for a roof collapse in western Sydney overnight.

Emergency services were called to a construction site on Duck St, Auburn, after the manager of the site reported part of the large structure had caved in.

Nobody was on site when the roof came down.

A NSW Police spokesman said officers attended the scene this morning but had since left.

He said the incident was presumably caused by the wet weather overnight.

Southern parts of Sydney were the worst hit in the metropolitan region overnight, with up to 20mm of rain falling since 9am.

But that was nothing compared to the 152mm that fell in the same time period in some areas of the Illawarra district.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Olenka Rudewych said a severe weather warning was still in place for the Illawarra district.

"However conditions are expecting to ease throughout the day all over the state today," she said this morning.

"We will still see some showers in Sydney as they pass through but they will generally clear up by the evening period."

She said the coast would be hit with a few isolated showers tomorrow but "nothing too significant" inland.
