Council launches Western Sydney light rail plan - ABC Online

Parramatta City Council is urging the New South Wales and Federal Governments to support its proposal to build a light rail network in Sydney's west.

The council has unveiled its first report into a $1.7 billion project that would stretch 24km through the region.

Parramatta Lord Mayor John Chedid says the network would connect Parramatta to Macquarie Park and Castle Hill, with up to 25 stations on the route.

He wants both governments to recognise the growing nature of western Sydney.

"We've already committed our $1m for the first stage of the proposal," he said.

"Now we're asking the state and federal governments to fund the next stage of the feasibility study that is required to go to the next level."

Mr Chedid believes the network could expand further to Bankstown, Rhodes and Homebush in the decades to come.
