Shot defending girlfriend: Sydney man has surgery - The Border Mail

April 29, 2013, 7:02 a.m.

A man who was shot in the kneecap after defending his girlfriend from the taunts from a group of men has undergone surgery following the confrontation in Sydney’s inner west.

Police are still searching for the men who began making offensive comments to the 19-year-old woman as she walked with her 21-year-old boyfriend along Victoria Street East in Burwood at 9.30pm on Friday.

When the 21-year-old objected to the remarks being made to his girlfriend, one of the group of men pulled out a BB gun - a type of air rifle - and shot him in the leg. The group then fled the scene.

The man’s girlfriend drove him to Ryde Hospital, where he was treated for a bullet wound to the leg. He underwent surgery on Saturday.

Police were called to the hospital and have launched an investigation into the shooting.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said police were still searching for the men, who have only been described as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the shooting, or who has information about the incident, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
