SYDNEY is in rainbow revolt with DIY rainbow crossings popping up everywhere.

Two nights ago the State Government removed the popular Oxford St rainbow crossing.

Then the DIY rainbow crossings began to pop up. Social media was abuzz with the ‘peaceful protest’ against the crossing’s removal.

Newtown Hotel, posted a picture of the original peaceful protest and a DIY crossing in Surry Hill by James ‘Breko’ Brechney and has since received 32, 000 hits on the post.

So in homage the hotel have painted their own.

“We just did one as a homage to James’ work and in support of what it stands for,” Newtown Hotel’s Danae Goiser said.

“The feedback has been great, everyone was pretty crushed when they removed (the Oxford St crossing),” she said.

Ms Goiser said inner west residents had especially jumped on the peaceful protest as both a sign of respect for what it stood for and in protest of its removal.

Newtown Hotel’s DIY has been chalked onto Buckland Lane, a laneway running down the side of the hotel and is two meters tall and 3 meters long.

Mr Brechney is urging people from all over Sydney to create their own DIY.

“This cost me $7 - would love to see more chalk rainbow crossings popping up all over Sydney,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Newtown Hotel's queer night, Snapback, organiser Siobhan Poynton said has painted her own in Marrickville Lane, Marrickville.

"I loved the one James posted so I thought 'I'm going to spend my day off doing as many rainbow crossings as I can’,'' she said.

"It's a really cool thing, even if you take it away from queer pride, it brightens up dark, danky lanes.''
