SWIMMING a harbour mile isn't quite as easy as walking a country one as a man from regional NSW found in Sydney Harbour overnight.

About 3am the man from Orange on holiday staying in Redfern was spotted by members of the public diving into the pitch black water at Dawes Point directly underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Police were called and officers parked their cars on Hickson Road facing into the Harbour shining their high beams across the water in an effort to spot the man.

A helicopter search was about to be called when the water police found the man safe and soaked standing in a corner on the other side of the harbour at Kirribilli.

The man was loaded into the police boat and ferried back across the harbour to Ives Steps where his late night dip began.

One of the water policeman involved in the rescue thought the man would be deceased and they’d be getting the diver’s in to search for his body in the morning.

The intoxicated man with a bloodied shirt was helped from the boat into the back of a paddy wagon where paramedics bandaged his right arm before taking him away in an ambulance.

A guard patrolling on the Bridge didn’t see the man jump in but saw four police cars speeding to the scene and the commotion of the search unfolding.

A nearby fisherman was astonished with where they found the man given where he’d jumped in but the stillness of the water seemingly allowed the curious tourist to swim where he pleased.
