AN apparent gangland execution has police scouring a suburban Sydney street for clues after a man's body was found wrapped in a sheet.

Antwerp Street in Bankstown in Sydney's southwest was cordoned off this morning after the discovery of the body by the road late last night.

Police did not confirm reports the dead man had been shot in the head or that his hands were tied behind his back with cable ties.

The street is next to Bankstown Hospital and it's believed an off-duty paramedic found the body.

Police this morning were conducting line searches of the street as forensics officers continued examining the crime scene.
