Live AFL: Sydney Swans v Geelong - Sydney Morning Herald - Sydney Morning Herald

8:59pm: Q2 23.49 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 9.4 (58)

Goodes gets a free kick 50m out on a tight angle...his shot is off hands in the goalsquare and falls to Parker...he is dragged off his kick and the ball is cleared by the Cats. One minute left on the count-down clock.

8:58pm: Q2 23.49 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 9.4 (58)

Bad news for Sydney with Lewis Roberts-Thomson ruled out for the night with a knee injury. Rather than wait until half time, just 2.30 away, Sydney has activated its substitute Mitch Morton straight away.

8:57pm: Q2 22.58 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 9.4 (58)

Podsiadly marked on the half-forward flank about 40m out...it would have been a tough set shot but Ben McGlynn gave away 50m! A period of resistance from Sydney ends by giving Geelong an easy goal.

8:49pm: Q2 15.06 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 8.3 (51)

Free kick against Grundy going to Motlop for a high fend...Motlop lines up Stevie-J style for the set-shot-snap even though he's 40m out on the boundary...and he nails it! Motlop kicks his third of the night to bridge the gap.

8:48pm: Q2 13.43 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 7.3 (45)

Chance for Geelong with Duncan lining up...his set shot from 40m is across the face for a point.

8:47pm: Q2 12.49 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 7.2 (44)

Two big marks from Heath Grundy deep in defence! One straight from the Cats centre clearance and the other in a pack of four after a high inside 50m from Christensen.

8:45pm: Q2 9.48 - SYD 10.3 (63) GEE 7.2 (44)

McGlynn involved in the build-up again for Sydney to send a long ball inside 50m...marked by Hanneberry 20m out! And he converts from in front to keep extending this match-high lead.

8:39pm: Q2 4.47 - SYD 9.2 (56) GEE 7.2 (44)

Ben McGlynn used his pace around the boundary side wing to launch a Sydney counter attack...he passed to Jack who rather than blaze at goal from a tight angle squared to Roberts-Thomson! The fans wanted 50m for a late push by Enright...but it matters not because LRT converts the set shot from 25m on a slight angle. Biggest margin of the night.

8:36pm: Q2 START - SYD 8.1 (49) GEE 7.2 (44)

So will the shoot-out continue or has the quarter-time break allowed the coaches to send a defensive message?

8:35pm: QTR TIME - SYD 8.1 (49) GEE 7.2 (44)

8:28pm: QTR TIME - SYD 8.1 (49) GEE 7.2 (44)

How's that for entertainment! 15 combined goals and Sydney striking last to hold a narrow lead at the first change. Geelong led by up to eight points during the shoot-out.

8:27pm: Q1 35.17 - SYD 8.1 (49) GEE 7.2 (44)

Boundary throw-in with 20 seconds left...Kennedy first hands...to Bolton...he runs to 20m and dribbles through a goal! Great play by Sydney to find space with so many players around the ball. Nine seconds left...time for another goal?

8:25pm: Q1 34.25 - SYD 7.1 (43) GEE 7.2 (44)

Cats happy to play keepings off in the last minute of the quarter...until Luke Parker caught Motlop in possession! Sydney went long into attack but there was no-one home.

8:23pm: Q1 32.25 - SYD 7.1 (43) GEE 7.2 (44)

Two minutes to go on the count-down clock. But who would want this action to end!

8:23pm: Q1 32.01 - SYD 7.1 (43) GEE 7.2 (44)

A second running goal of the quarter for McVeigh! Geelong only got the kick just outside of defensive 50m where Sydney hands were clean at the fall of the ball...feeding through McVeigh to run inside 50m and goal.

8:22pm: Q1 29.58 - SYD 6.1 (37) GEE 7.2 (44)

Sydney attacking through Jetta...into the forward pocket where Pyke's clever tap nearly played through a teammate...but Lonergan was able to rush a behind.

8:19pm: Q1 26.52 - SYD 6.0 (36) GEE 7.2 (44)

Geelong goal straight from the centre break! Cats worked the ball inside forward 50m with a bouncing ball that Hawkins roved...he handed off to Stokes running in from 30m...and his snap on the run goes through to restore Geelong's eight-point lead.

8:18pm: Q1 26.02 - SYD 6.0 (36) GEE 6.2 (38)

Sydney broke through Parker on the wing and his kick to Goodes isolated one-on-one with Enright was perfect for the veteran Swan to use his strength to push off and mark! Goodes set shot from 40m...is perfect! The Swans can't miss, that's six straight to start the night!

8:16pm: Q1 24.55 - SYD 5.0 (30) GEE 6.2 (38)

Defence anyone? Another goal straight from the centre square! Selwood shrugged a tackle after breaking out of the middle, handed off to Motlop at the top of the 50m and his running finish was similar to his first of the night.

8:15pm: Q1 23.40 - SYD 5.0 (30) GEE 5.2 (32)

Instant reply for Sydney! McGlynn sent the Swans inside forward 50m where Bolton took the ball on the bounce, rode the tackle and snapped a 30m goal on his right foot! The shoot-out continues without either side getting a break!

8:14pm: Q1 22.07 - SYD 4.0 (24) GEE 5.2 (32)

Harry Taylor strikes again! Geelong swept end-to-end with a long kick inside forward 50m and Taylor was able to rip the ball free from a pack and pop through a goal from the top of the square.

Expect to see a few replays of Kieren Jack's goose-step in the passage of play leading up to the goal.

8:12pm: Q1 19.30 - SYD 4.0 (24) GEE 4.2 (26)

Taylor is proving a tough opponent for Richards...the Cat gets a free kick for chopping the arms on the behind line...he's given a tough angle but his snap shot is perfect and the Cats re-take the lead.

8:09pm: Q1 17.14 - SYD 4.0 (24) GEE 3.2 (20)

A chaotic passage of play ends in a goal for Sydney! Goodes finished it with a right-foot snap from 20m out. Sydney flowed forward but Kieren Jack's kick to go inside 50m was smothered and a massive scrap ensued. Geelong effected three straight smothers as shots for goal were blocked, but when the ball deflected to Goodes there was no opponent close enough to stop him from goaling.

8:07pm: Q1 15.03 - SYD 3.0 (18) GEE 3.2 (20)

Missed opportunity for the Cats...Harry Taylor had a set shot 30m out on a 45-degree angle...but put it wide to the near side

8:05pm: Q1 13.17 - SYD 3.0 (18) GEE 3.1 (19)

Fierce contest on the half-forward line fo Sydney...no Cats player could emerge with clean possession for the clearing kick. McGlynn burst through to take the ball and attempted an off-balance shot on the run from the top of the 50m...it skewed wide to the right and out of bounds.

8:03pm: Q1 10.10 - SYD 3.0 (18) GEE 3.1 (19)

Another instant reply from the Cats! Geelong worked their way around the boundary...with an ambitious kick inside 50m hitting the grass for Chapman and Armstrong to chase 30m out...as it bounced towards goal Chapman held off Armstrong like a soccer centre forward, then swept his left-foot through the ball to kick it off the ground for a goal! Great instincts shown from the veteran Cat.

8:01pm: Q1 9.10 - SYD 3.0 (18) GEE 2.1 (13)

Malceski marked a Geelong attempt to clear defensive 50m from a boundary throw-in...he took a left-foot set shot from a tight angle on his left outside the 50m arc...and put it through! A brilliant kick and something out of nothing for the Swans, who re-take the lead.

7:58pm: Q1 5.17 - SYD 2.0 (12) GEE 2.1 (13)

The shoot-out continues! Sydney's turn to attack with Rampe getting the ball forward...Goodes marked on half forward and rather than take a shot he handed off to the running McVeigh...and he put it through from 40m! Still more than 16 minutes left on the count-down clock...might be a long quarter if the goals keep coming.

7:56pm: Q1 3.50 - SYD 1.0 (6) GEE 2.1 (13)

Goals galore! Sydney went forward from the centre bounce but Geelong swept off half-back untouched, with Horlin-Smith handing off to Motlop at the top of the 50m...he ran to 35m out and kicked the goal! Under almost no pressure...Champagne football for the Cats to open a seven-point lead.

7:55pm: Q1 2.10 - SYD 1.0 (6) GEE 1.1 (7)

Perfect clearance and goal for the Cats! Christensen got the hand-pass from Selwood and his pass inside 50m was taken by Horlin-Smith and put through from 40m on the left! It took all of 10 seconds for Geelong to strike back.

7:53pm: Q1 1.15 - SYD 1.0 (6) GEE 0.1 (1)

Sydney replies with the first goal of the night! The Swans swept end-to-end and Reid marked in the pocket 20m out. He converted the set shot.

7:52pm: Q1 0.48 - SYD 0.0 (0) GEE 0.1 (1)

Cats get the first score of the night after a long ball to the square came off hands over the back and Grundy dived on the loose ball to rush a behind.

7:51pm: Q1 START - SYD 0.0 (0) GEE 0.0 (0)
