Search continues for missing fisherman - Sydney Morning Herald

The search continues this morning for a fisherman washed out to sea at North Curl Curl around 1pm yesterday.

The 23-year-old Queenscliffe man was swept out in dangerous surf conditions yeasterday, and continuing swells have made it impossible for divers to enter the water this morning.

Helicopter and boat patrols are underway from Dee Why headland to Bluefish Point, police said.

Rough seas, with waves up to six metres, and high temperatures combined yesterday to create a difficult day for surf lifesavers and emergency services, with numerous people swept out to sea and requiring rescue at beaches across Sydney.

At Warriewood on the Northern Beaches, a man, 23, died after he was washed out to sea. Police said he jumped into the water from rocks.

He was pulled unconscious from the ocean, and did not recover.

A 42-year-old rock fisherman was washed out to sea at Merry Beach, south of Sydney, and was rescued after an extensive search.

Most beaches across Sydney were closed – but warnings didn't stop swimmers seeking relief from humid, sunny conditions. At least three beachgoers were taken to hospital, with many more treated for injuries at the beach.

Donna Wishart from Surf Lifesaving NSW said Saturday had been incredibly dangerous.

"The surf is massive, it's been really treacherous conditions all day," she said. "We've had quite a few incidents."

The waves were caused by tropical cyclone Sandra travelling down the coast past Lord Howe Island during the week and were incredibly powerful.

The choppy, dangerous conditions are expected to continue into next week as a southerly moves up the coast bringing high winds and a cool change, the Bureau of Meterology's Jake Phillips said.
