WHEN Marcelino Fernandez Verdes took over as the chief executive of German construction giant Hochtief last month, he quipped in a note to staff: "I may not speak German, but I do speak building."
It was music to the ears of Leighton chief executive Hamish Tyrwhitt. After a frustrating year of shock writedowns, more surprise executive departures and second guessing by former Hochtief chief executive Frank Stieler (a German lawyer by training), Tyrwhitt is pleased to now have a fellow civil engineer at the helm of his biggest shareholder.
