Van Egmond knocks back Sydney offer - The Australian

NEWCASTLE Jets coach Gary van Egmond has turned down an audacious bid from Sydney FC to take over at the club.

The Australian understands the Sky Blues approached van Egmond recently to fill the position vacated by Ian Crook three weeks ago.

Sydney is struggling following four straight losses and is at the bottom of the table with just six points from a possible 24.

The club has a shortlist of contenders to fill the coaching position including former Sydney coach Pierre Littbarski, former Chelsea manager Avram Grant and locals Frank Farina and Miron Bleiberg.

But van Egmond, who took the Jets to the A-League title in 2007, was the man they wanted.

He was on the club's list at the end of last season after coach Vitezslav Lavicka announced he was quitting.

Jets chief executive Robbie Middleby labelled Sydney’s approach to can Egmond as “disrespectful’’.

“That’s not how things should operate,’’ Middleby told The Australian. “We are disappointed with what happened.

“For this to happen seven games into the season is simply not on.’’
