Sydney suburb rocked by large explosion - ABC Online

A man has been badly burnt after large explosion sparked a fire which gutted a house in suburban Sydney this afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the house on the corner of Patrick and Stoney Creek Roads in Kingsgrove around 1:00pm (AEDT) and found the house engulfed in flames.

Fire Superintendent Paul Bailey says crews also found a man in the yard of the home.

"He has suffered extensive burns. He's been treated on scene and transported to hospital by the New South Wales Ambulance service," he said.

Superintendent Bailey says fire crews have all but extinguished the blaze and saved neighbours' homes from fire, though debris are strewn over a large area.

He says at this stage it appears LPG gas cylinders may have sparked the blaze but he ruled out any suggestion of a drug lab.

"We've got a fairly good view of the premises because most of the walls have blown out and there' no indication of drug labs, no drug lab paraphernalia or anything that indicates that to be the case," he said.

Police are at the scene and all lanes of Stoney Creek Road have been closed.
