IN 2009 the Sydney Symphony undertook its first tour of China and performed in Macau, where the provincial party chairman was our guest. Afterwards he took me aside and said while he thought our performance was wonderful there was something even more important for him. The fact Australia had sent its finest musicians and orchestra to China demonstrated a respect for the people of China and the party leadership that was truly significant and deeply appreciated.
