A MAN allegedly started a fire on a train in Sydney.
Police have charged the 25-year-old man who is believed to have got on the train bound for Sydney at Springwood in the Blue Mountains. The alleged fire began about 8.20pm last night.
"As the train approached Westmead Railway Station the man allegedly set fire to a pile of paper on the top level of the carriage, causing extensive damage to a number of seats," NSW Police said in a statement.
The fire was extinguished and the man was arrested at Parramatta station and conveyed to Parramatta police station.
He was subsequently charged with lighting a fire on a train and damage property by fire.
The man was given conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on the 16 January 2013.
