More thunderstorms set for NSW

Heavy downpours are forecast for areas north of Sydney Friday, with the weekend bringing more stable and cooler conditions. Meteorologist Josh Fisher reports.

A thunderstorm is hitting Sydney, moving over the inner-west towards the city and the eastern suburbs.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning for severe thunderstorms, possibly bringing large hailstones and heavy rainfall to Sydney, the Hunter and the central tablelands.

Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the storm was moving over Auburn and Bankstown about 1.30pm on Friday.

Grey clouds, heavy rain and some hail rolled into the city about 1.45pm.

"It's moving east, it's heading towards the city," Mr Sharpe said.

"So anywhere from Randwick up to the city, maybe also Mosman and possibly Manly."

Mr Sharpe said there was also a storm cell producing heavy rain north of Gosford, on the central coast, with the possibility of damaging winds.

It follows a storm that hammered south and south-west suburbs on Thursday, bringing down trees, damaging roofs and cutting power to thousands of residents.

Penrith and Campbelltown were hard-hit as large hail and wind gusts of up to 117 km/h damaged properties, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jane Golding said.

Thousands of homes and businesses on the Ausgrid network in Loftus, Yarrawarrah and parts of Balgowlah were left without power for several hours on Thursday.
