Heavy load
Touring metal festival Bastardfest lumbers into town this weekend, taking over The Basement for two nights. Friday night's bill has Melbourne grind band Blood Duster headlining alongside Aeon of Horus, I Exist, the Reverend Jesse Custer, King Parrot, Disentomb, Alice Through the Windshield Glass and Futility, with the first band on at 6.30pm. The show will provide a rare opportunity to hear tracks from Blood Dusters' recent album KVLT, as the band released the album with the title etched into record itself, rendering it unplayable, and promptly destroyed the master tape. Meanwhile, Saturday's festivities kick off just before 5pm and host Psycroptic, Voyager, Daemon Foetal Harvest, Captain Cleanoff, Aversions Crown, Desecrator, Mytile Vey Lorth, House of Thumbs, Descending Upon Eden and Law of the Tongue playing. Tickets are $25 + bf for each night, available from Moshtix.
Boom, shake the room
Melbourne band Boomgates come from impressive stock. Featuring members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring (frontman Brendan Huntley, also lends his distinctive vocals to Boomgates), Dick Diver (Steph Hughes, moonlighting from her day job as Triple J's resident Aus music expert) and the Twerps, the five-piece won fans far and wide with a run of singles capturing their scrappy, melodic brand of garage rock. Now comes the album Double Natural, a fine addition to the catalogue and one that sees the band steering towards breezy, country-tinged sound. Boomgates will make their Canberra debut with an intimate show at Smiths Alternative Bookshop this Friday night, supported by locals TV Colours and Danger Beach. Doors open at 7pm and entry is $15.
Afternoon delight
By popular demand, the Canberra Jazz Club is hosting another afternoon of jazz at the Austrian Club, Mawson this Sunday. The show will feature the Bridge City Jazz Band - whose membership is currently split between Canberra and Sydney - and the all-local Black Mountain Jazz Band. The music kicks off at 1.30pm and entry is $20. For more information on the club, see canberrajazzclub.com.
Last days
After a series of increasingly elaborate gigs over the past year, the Last Prom is making its final bow this weekend. Conceived by local musician and writer Nick Delatovic - frontman of garage stalwarts the Missing Lincolns and member of roughly a dozen other groups - the Last Prom is as much an extended art/theatre piece as it is a band. Delatovic, as ''the Antichrist'', handles frontman duties, while a crack team of local musicians including Julia Johnson of Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens fame, play the four horsemen of the apocalypse, backing him on guitar, bass, drums and keys. For The Last Prom: An Apocalypse in One Act, the Ainslie Arts Centre will be transformed into Alistair Crowley High School, whose end-of-year dance coincides with the end of the world. Doors open at 8pm, Saturday and tickets are $12 + bf from Moshtix.
Page boy
Acclaimed London-born crooner Gregory Page, a man who has earned high praise from the likes of Jason Mraz and Judy Collins and shared stages with Bob Dylan, will be in town this weekend. Courtesy of his jazz-singer mother, Page grew up with a constant soundtrack of Billie Holiday 78s and other music from the era that has filtered into his own tunes: an instinctive mix of jazz, blues and folk. With 20 self-released albums to his name, the now US-based Page is touring his new big band LP Shine, Shine, Shine. He plays at The Merry Muse, Turner from 7.30pm this Friday with Mic Conway's National Junk Band and on Sunday from 4pm at The Front with Liz Frencham. Merry Muse tickets are $17 and $14 concession. The Front is $10.
Power couple
Despite being stationed far out in coastal Victoria, husband and wife duo Victoriana Gaye have still managed to maintain a solid gigging schedule, playing an unbroken run of shows every weekend for the past three years. Vicki Gaye Philipp and Jeff Raglus - a former Mambo designer and member of the Black Sorrows and Bachelors from Prague - will again be packing up their assortment of guitars, trumpet and harmonica and bringing their grunge, folk and mariachi-flecked brand of pop to The Front this Wednesday night. Doors open at 8pm and entry is $10 with a free CD.
Bull in China
With a tour of China on the horizon, members of Central Coast band Elliot the Bull are getting themselves up to match-fitness with another spin around their home country. Having toured Australia as guests of US bands Lydia and As Tall as Lions, this trip sees the four-piece heading out under its own steam, promoting a new EP of pleasant indie-pop fare that was recorded with Jezabels producer Lachlan Mitchell. The band play a free show at The Phoenix this Saturday. Doors open at 8pm.
