A pedestrian has died after being hit by a truck on the M4 in western Sydney.

Emergency services were called to the M4 east of the James Ruse Drive on ramp at Granville at 5.30am (AEDT) after the truck hit the man.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man could not be revived.

The truck driver stopped after the crash and has spoken with police at the scene. He will undergo mandatory testing.

Lanes on the M4 will remain affected for some time to allow inquiries into the events leading up to the crash to be carried out at the scene.

City-bound motorists are advised to use the Great Western Highway and Parramatta Road as there are already extensive delays.
