Mary in Sydney for Opera House birthday - Ninemsn

Crown Prince Frederik and his Australian wife Princess Mary will help mark celebrations for the Opera House's 40th birthday in Sydney on Thursday.

The royal couple will pay tribute to the Danish designer of the Opera House, Jorn Utzon, as part of a five-day official visit and celebration of the landmark.

Frederik and Mary, whose love bloomed in a Sydney pub during the 2000 Olympic Games, will start festivities, which includes a concert that will recreate the first musical performance that officially opened the Opera House in 1973, featuring Beethoven's Symphony No 9.

The couple will have a private tour of the Opera House on Thursday and then visit Government House and meet NSW Governor Marie Bashir.

Other official functions for the royal couple, who have four young children, include visiting Five Dock Primary School on Friday.

On Saturday, they will visit the Australian Twin Registry at Sydney Children's Hospital and then meet with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

A gala concert and official reception will be held for Frederik and Mary at the Opera House on Sunday night.

On Monday, the couple will meet the Danish Export Association before heading back to the Opera House to attend the Crown Prince Couple Awards 2013.
