A SYDNEY shop claims to have the best fries in Sydney - we have the people's verdict.



Hot chips and vegetarian burgers franchise Lord of the Fries launched in Sydney today and made the audacious claim to having the best fries in town.


Bolstered by seven outlets in Melbourne, co-founder Mark Koronczyk is launched his first Sydney shop today in George St, causing a fry frenzy.


About 50 people lined up outside the store for the midday opening to get their hands on free hot chips given out as part of the launch.


About 80 per cent of the people that were asked said the hot chips were indeed the best in Sydney.


Sam Elhusseini from Eastlakes and Brent Peatey of Kensington were first in line after arriving at the store just before 11am.


Mr Peatey, who described himself as "a big fan of fries in general", said he was impressed with the chunky chips and sauces.


"The chips are pretty good, they're pretty light I think," he said.


"They're not as heavy as your normal take-away chips. And the sauces are awesome."


Glebe resident Lewis Worthington said it was the only Sydney CBD place he was aware of that served hot chips with shredded cheese and gravy.


'I love it," he said.


A yearning for the perfect fried chip and a disdain for "nasty frozen chemical fries" resulted in Mr Koronczyk, his brother Sam Koronczyk and wife Mandy Walker starting their own business serving the salty morsel with homemade sauces and vegetarian and vegan burgers.

Mr Koronczyk said the secret to a great chip was using fresh potatoes with the skin still on, cutting and blanching them, frying them in a mix of sunflower and cottonseed high quality oils at a low temperature, and then snapfrying them in very hot oil just before serving.


"The whole process takes about 24 hours," he said.


However, the people's verdict was not unanimous.


Tracey Le of Waterloo said while they were "nice and chunky", she had tasted better hot chips in Sydney.


Horsley Park's Julie Siciliano thought they were overpriced.


Steven Levy of North Bondi said the best chips were sold elsewhere.


"Chips from Fishmongers in Bondi are bigger, better and cheaper," he said.
