NRL: Sydney Roosters hand out thrashing to St George Illawarra Dragons - ABC Online

The Sydney Roosters strengthened their position inside the top four with a 36-0 thrashing of St George Illawarra at Kogarah on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Penrith produced a second-half blitz to defeat Gold Coast 40-18 in Darwin.

The Roosters showed no mercy for their struggling opponents, running in six tries all converted by New South Wales five-eighth James Maloney.

Maloney, who suffered a fractured eye socket in State of Origin II, crossed for one of the visitors' four-pointers, helping the Roosters jump back above Melbourne into second place on the ladder.

Despite the size of the win, Maloney found fault in the Roosters' performance.

"We were a little disappointed, especially at half-time with our defence," he told Grandstand.

There is plenty to work on. It's nice to hold them to zero again but we were far from perfect tonight.

"Too many penalties, they didn't have to kick out of trouble at all and every set we finished we let them off the hook.

The Dragons had more ball, and a penalty count advantage, but their poor kicking game and impatience with ball in hand cost them dearly.

Blues centre Michael Jennings raced more than 70 metres for the Roosters third try in the 33rd minute after busy hooker Jake Friend scooped up a blocked kick from Nathan Fien.

While the Roosters also made some errors, they were much more clinical when they made their way into Dragons territory.

Even the loss at halftime of Sonny Bill Williams to a hamstring niggle didn't disrupt the visitors.

They piled on three more converted tries in the third quarter through Shaun Kenny-Dowall, forward Aiden Guerra and winger Daniel Tupou.

Roosters: 36 (J Maloney, B Cordner, M Jennings, S Kenny-Dowall, A Guerra, D Tupou tries; J Maloney 6/6 cons)

Dragons: 0
